CAPE ELIZABETH -- Milton F. Farnsworth, 93, of Cape Elizabeth, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.

He was born in Jonesport on Nov. 3, 1918, the fourth child of Clara Dunning and Lester Daniel Farnsworth. Milton graduated from Jonesport High School in 1936 and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at Fort Williams. He received his pilot license in 1939 and was a pilot for the Civil Air Patrol.

During World War II he enlisted into the U, S, Navy Seabees and Marines from 1943 to 1947. Milt received his 50 year pin from his Masonic Lodge and was an active member of Kora Temple.

Upon his discharge from the Marines in 1947, he became the Service Manager for Pine Motors, then Verrier Construction and Seaboard Engineering, where he was captain of a 112 ft. seagoing tug. He did hard hat and scuba diving for underwater demolition. He rescued a number of men from the sea and was awarded commendations from the Coast Guard and the Army Corp. of Engineers.

Milt worked for Commercial Welding for 17 years. While at Commercial Welding he dredged Portland Harbor and built Marine East Marina. Upon retirement he started his own business P&M Repair.

Milton was predeceased by his son, Dale Maurice Farnsworth, who died March 29, 2012 in Freeport. He leaves his wife, Peggy; two children, Clarence Farnsworth and Paula Anton, three step children, Holly Ready, Lydia Webber and Ted Gilfillan; grandchildren, Mike, Elaine, Michelle, Kenny, Steve, Danny, Kathy and Kim, four step grandchildren, John, Brendan, Wendy and Christian; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Milton devoted his life to helping others, both human and the four legged kind.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough for their care and support.

There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarene. Arrangements made by the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland.
