J. H. C. Petersen was a pioneer merchant and founder of the J. H. C. Petersen department store, which at the time of his death, was one of the largest of it's kind in Davenport.
John H.C.Petersen originally from Schlewig Holstein estabilshed his business in 1872. Advertising in both German and English, it began as a small dry goods , but grew throughout the 1880s. John retired in 1892, leaving the business to his sons, who constructed a four story building on West 2nd and Main with the help of architect
Frederick Clausen The Petersen family had developed Davenports largest retail with 400 employees.
It is now known as Von Maur.
