He was born on December 31, 1919 in Tuckasegee, North Carolina to the late Abraham V. “Tumpy” and Minnie (Phillips) Elliott. He was a native of Robbinsville, North Carolina and was a WWII US Army Air Force Veteran. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater under the command of General Joseph Stillwell. He and his four brothers were one the largest fighting groups of Graham County and became known as the “Fighting Elliott Brothers” who served in WWII. Sam was a recipient of Honor Flight to Washington DC. He had worked at North American Rockwell and retired from EBCO Manufacturing after 22 years of service. Member of the Jersey Baptist Church, attended Genoa Baptist Church, member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, The Heritage Foundation’s Leader’s Club and The Wounded Warriors Project.
Sam loved the Lord and was an avid reader of his Bible of which he could quote scripture and loved to carry on conversations about the Bible. In his early years he loved to hunting, shooting and had a pair of coon dogs and an old jeep he used for hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years: Icie Luellen (Rich Anderson) Elliott; sons: Lowell (Vickie) of Delaware, Keith (Alice) of Sunbury, Stanley (Janet) of Lima; grandchildren: Lori Cook, Tracy Engle, Kimberly Slane, Jason Elliott, Melonie McCaulley, Ashley Capps, Samuel Elliott; 20 great-grandchildren; sister: Geneva Williams of Robinsville, North Carolina.
Preceded in death by sister: Nora Orr; brothers: Alfred, Howard, Archie, Carl, Ronald; grandson: Jonathan Elliott.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury where services will be held Thursday with Pastor Phil Duncan and Wayne Booth officiating. Entombment with Military Honors will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
