"Eddie", age 83, passed away at St. Agnes Medical Center, after a long and courageous battle with illness.

Eddie was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

Eddie was born in Oxford, IA to William P. Burns and Mary Ellen (Donohoe) Burns.

He married Marian Schuller on October 3, 1949, in Faribault, MN. They shared 56 years together.

In 1939, Eddie graduated from University High School, receiving all-city honors for achievement in basketball and football. He enrolled at the University of Iowa where he played basketball for the university team.

Eddie's college attendance was interrupted from 1942 to 1945 when he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, working in English Radar Counter Measures in England.

Following his service, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1947.

In 1947, Eddie began a career in sales management with the Hormel Company that took him to several states.

Eddie retired and moved with Marian to Pine Mountain Lake in Groveland, CA in 1983.

Throughout his life, Eddie remained active in his community and was affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the Men's Club, several golf course committees, the Historical Society and various church committees.

Eddie had a special interest in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Big Oak Flat, CA and was active in the church expansion program.

Family was Eddie's top priority. He was a pillar of strength and an irreplaceable source of guidance, inspiration and encouragement. In the words of grandchild, Shannon Burns, "throughout the amazing life he has lived... he has taken everything in stride, always smiling, cracking jokes, full of grace and thanks and joy. What an inspiration, what a role model my grandfather is to me!"

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patsy Dikitolia; and brother, Justin Burns.

Eddie is survived by Marian Burns, his loving wife; children, Terri Bricker and her husband Ken, Jan VanBuskirk, and Scott Burns and his wife Barbara; brother, Thomas Burns and his wife Rita; sisters, Anna Kathryn Burns and Eileen Leland and her husband Jim; and grandchildren, Danielle Bricker, Ryan Bricker, Rory Bricker, Jason VanBuskirk, Chris VanBuskirk, Sharon VanBuskirk, Shannon Burns, Sean Burns, Bailey Thompson, Jenna Thompson and Nicole Thompson
