Ruth Elizabeth Erwin Phillips, age 102, of Rogersville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 25, 2015. Ruth was born the year the Titanic sank and was raised in Erwin, TN.

After securing her college degree from Tusculum College, she married James O. Phillips, Jr. and has resided in Rogersville since that time. She taught school in the Unicoi County School System prior to her marriage. Ruth was a kind and considerate person and was dearly loved not only by her nearest kin and relatives, but by all those who were fortunate to know her. She was a longtime member of Rogersville Presbyterian Church. She was a competitive and good bridge player, an avid reader, and frequent traveler.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William E. Erwin; sister, Mildred Spainhour; brothers, Dennis and Ryburn Erwin; daughter, Alice Nannette Headland; and her son-in-law, George Bayer. She is survived by two sons, Jim Phillips and wife Julie, and Bill Phillips and wife Joyce; daughter, Ruthie Bayer; seven grandchildren, Scott Craig and wife Elizabeth, Matthew Headland and wife Sky, Susannah Ramsey, George Bayer,Jr., Jay Phillips, Jill Phillips Collins and husband Bill, and William Phillips and wife Erika; and 15 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at Rogersville Presbyterian Church. The service will be at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Rodney Norris officiating. Interment will follow the service in McKinney Cemetery
