Narcissus Fowler Cowart was the victim in an infamous murder case in Pickens County, Georgia. In the late 1870s, the case made headlines around the U.S. when her murderer, Kate Southern, was sentenced to death.

The governor of Georgia eventually pardoned Southern after the influence of manipulative newspaper stories that portrayed the victim as a wanton woman, intent on stealing Southern's husband. Southern was shown as a woman whose only crime was trying to save her family's honor, "accidentally" killing Fowler in the heat of the moment.

A couple of years after the trial, several newspapers printed the trial transcripts. These showed that earlier news reports not only exaggerated the facts, they printed complete fabrications.

After believing the original false newspaper stories, many were appalled to realized that Kate Southern had gotten away with the premeditated murder of Narcissus Fowler Cowart.
