John was born in the old community of Joesphsburg, Wilmot Twp; in 1859. His parents were Joseph Andrew Gatschene (1830-1871) and Magdalena Schneider (1831-1926).

He got married to Mary Stoesser on May 03rd, 1881 in the village of St. Agatha, Wilmot Twp; Marriage Register #011543.

They raised 5 known children in Ontario.
1. Bridget Gatschene 1882-1973.
2. Alfred John Gatschene 1884-1966.
3. Isabella Gatschene (Fidler) 1885-1912.
4. Richard Gatschene 1888-
5. Eleanora Gatschene 1899-

After the death of Mary in 1917, John remarried for the 2nd time to 47 year old Sabina McDermott. John was 59 years old. They were married in Stratford, Perth County on April 28th, 1919. Marriage Affidavit #021345.

Canada Voters List for 1935 and 1940 has him & his wife Sabina residing at 223 Herbert St. in Waterloo.
