A graveside service was held Tuesday, April 28 at 2pm. in the Fairview Memorial Gardens, Stockbridge, Georgia. He was most recently a resident of Christian City Assisted and Senior Living Facilty, Fairburn.

He was the son of the late James Olin Thompson and Cora Gaston Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife Faye T.Thompson, brothers and sisters Ervin Durell Thompson, Corp. Elisha Harlen Thompson, and Audrey Thompson.

Melvin or "Red" as his friends knew him, was a veteran having served in the United States Army during World War II. His unit was reponsible for the removal of American casualties from Iwo Jima. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad.

He is survived by his children Sandra Lewis and Rick Thompson, 4 grandchildren and several great-grand-children; his second wife of 31 years, Bobbie (P.I. Kirby) Costlow Thompson, siblings Jerri Thompson Broome and Ed Thompson of Mableton; step daughter Judy Preston and husband Robert; step grand-children Amy & Ginger, and other extended family members.

Military Honors provided by the US Army Honor Guard. His Wife, Bobbie was presented the flag which was draped over his coffin.

Horis Ward Funeral Home of Stockbridge, Georgia in charge of arrangements.
