Caroline graduated from Salem College in 1937. She taught French, Spanish and English at Gray High School before moving to Washington, DC where she worked as an editor for the CIA for 25 years. After retirement, she moved back to Winston-Salem. She married Jack Russell Alsbaugh on June 9, 1945 in Forsyth County, NC. He preceded her in death in July 1974. She was also preceded in death by her brothers James Lineback and William Augustus Diehl, and her sister Helen Diehl Barnes.
