East Hampton, Feb. 28, Lion Gardiner, member of the famous Gardiners Island family died of cirrhosis of the liver yesterday at this Ocean Ave home here. He was 57.
Mr. Gardiner was a descendant of the first Lord Lion Gardiner, who received the island from the English crown in 139. The island had been granted to Lord Gardiner because his kindness to the Indian tribes had been instrumental in dissuading them from molesting early English settlers.
Ever since the English crown grant the island has been in possession of the Gardiner family, being handed down, with few exceptions, from eldest son to eldest son. Mr. Gardiner was the 13th proprietor.
Mr. Gardiner married twice. His first wife was the former Helen Harjes of Paris, member of the family French bankers associated with the Morgan firm in that country. They were divorced in 1920 and later he married the former Ida Loomis of New York, who survives him.
Funeral Sunday
In addition to his second wife, he is survived by a daughter by his first marriage, Mrs. Henri (Dorothy) Krainik of Paris, who arrived in this country about 10 days ago; a brother, Winthrop G. Gardiner of East Hampton and two sisters, Mrs. Alex R. Cox of London and Mrs. W. S. Goesbeck Fowler of New York.
The funeral service will be held here Sunday at 2:30 p.m. n St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rev. William Grainger, rector of the church will conduct the services. Burial will be in the cemetery on Gardiner's Island.
