Born in Lebanon on October 5, 1925, he was the son of the late Dr. Adam L. and Stella Mader Hauer. He graduated from Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia in 1949 and completed his internship at Lancaster General Hospital.
He served as a US Air Force Flight Surgeon from 1953 – 1955, being honorably discharge as a Captain. He retired in 1993 after 43 years of service as a solo family practice physician on Cumberland Street in Lebanon. He served on the staff of the GSH and Lebanon Valley General Hosp. In addition to his general practice, Dr. Hauer served as physician for the Lebanon County prison and was active as the Lebanon plant physician for Bethlehem Steel from March 1971 through the next 13 years. He served as physician for a number of industries and insurance companies in the Lebanon area. He was a member of the American Medical Association.
Dr. Hauer was a self-taught organist and played for 28 years at his Salem Lutheran Church, where he was a member, for Lenten Services and Family Christmas Eve Services. He was a man of faith and was thankful for God's blessings and grace.
He enjoyed developing black and white photography, and was an avid hunter. He often made house calls on his motorcycle and acquired the loveable nickname "Dr. Rat." He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a hearty laugh.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Hauer is survived by 3 sons Marlin Hauer, Jr, Lewisburg (and his daughter Heather White, State College), Dieter Hauer, Trappe, Peter Hauer, Salt Lake City, UT (and his daughter Kendall Hauer, Las Vegas, NV); 4 daughters Dr. Kirsten Hauer, Greenville DE ( and her daughter Ava Borowski, Ithaca, NY), Kundry, wife of Richard Grove, Camp Hill and their daughters Alice Ruff and Audrey Rowe), Heidi, wife of Edward Preisendanz, Wilmington, DE (and their son Eric Preisendez), Marie Spinelli, Lebanon, Dr. Hauer's brother Mader's daughter Carolyn Hauer, & Family, Lebanon, his brother-in-law Harold Rovins, Lebanon, 4 nephews and 4 nieces in the Palmyra area, and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lebanon surgeon Dr. Mader L. Hauer in 1947 and son Alan L. Hauer in 1978.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend Dr. Hauer's funeral services on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 12 Noon from Salem Lutheran Church, 119 N. 8th St., Lebanon, PA 17046 with Rev. Andrew Evenson officiating. A viewing will be held Friday, May 1, 2015 from 6 to 8 PM at Porterfield-Scheid Funeral Directors & Cremation Services, Ltd., 890 Isabel Dr., Lebanon, PA 17042 (next to Quentin Circle) and Saturday, 10 AM to time of service at the church. Interment will be made in Mt. Annville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in Dr. Hauer's memory may be made to Alzheimer's Association for Research, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
