He was born Aug. 22, 1967, in Parsons to Marshall Lee Abernathy Sr. and Beatrice Stephenson. Marshall grew up in Parsons, where he attended school and was a 1985 graduate of Parsons High School. He then earned an associate degree from Cowley Community College in Arkansas City.
While serving in the United States Army during the Gulf War, Marshall was deployed to Riad, Saudi Arabia. Upon his honorable discharge, he lived in Pittsburg for a time before returning to Parsons where he worked as a machinist and foreman at Dayton Superior.
He was a member of Watson Memorial Church of God in Christ, where he also served as a deacon. He enjoyed all sports, especially softball and fishing.
He married Linda Key. They later divorced. He married Christine Winkler. They later divorced.
Survivors include two daughters, Jordan Abernathy of Oklahoma City and Aquila Abernathy of Parsons; a stepson, Donzell Harding; four brothers, Alfred Abernathy of Wichita, Kenneth Smith, Aaron “Skip” Smith and his wife, Debra, and Michael Smith and his wife, Sheila, all of Parsons; and two sisters, Dorothy Dennis and Delores Dodd, both of Parsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Emmett D. Smith.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Watson Memorial Church of God In Christ in Parsons. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
