Born in and a lifelong resident of Aiken County, SC, he was a son of the late John Wesley and Emma Louise Cockrell Mitchum. A veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, he proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, earing the rank of Sergeant. He was a former Chaplain for the Aiken Marine Corps League and was a former Chaplain with the State Marine Corps League. Rev. Mitchum was Pastor of Grace Baptist Church from September 1971 until the time of his death. He retired from B and S Machine Tool, where he was a Machinist. He enjoyed woodworking and was a Ham Radio Operator.
Interment, with Honors provided by a United States Marine Corps Honor Guard will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Bath, SC.
