Joel Lewis (of Spotsylvania County, VA) , son of David and his first wife, Miss Terrell, was born about 1730, in Hanover County, Virginia.

He emigrated to Albemarle county with his father and others of the family about 1750, as the first record of his name is found in deeds of gifts of tracts of land on Moore's Creek, dated 1750, to William Terrell Lewis, David Lewis, John Lewis and Joel Lewis.

The executors of the last will and testament of his father, David Lewis, Sr., who died in Albemarle County, Virginia, in 1779, were Joel Lewis, John Martin, James Lewis and Taliaferro Lewis. The subscribing witnesses to the same were, Stephen Willis, Anna Willis, Morning Clarkson, Robert Lewis and William Johnson.

Joel Lewis finally settled in Spotsylvania county, where he died in 1813.

He was three times married. His first wife was Mary Tureman, by whom he had only one son (Tureman Lewis).

His second wife was the widow Gordon, whose maiden name was Sarah Chiles (daughter of Manoah & Elizabeth Ann (Cheadle) Chiles), by whom he had three children. (Keilding, Molly & Frances "Fanny")

His third wife was Lucy Daniel, by whom he raised three children, (Susan, Joel II, and David) making seven in all, viz.:

1. Tureman Lewis, married Polly Davidson.
2. Keilding Lewis, died single.
3. Molly Lewis
4. Frances "Fanny" Lewis, married William Estes.
5. Susan Lewis, married Joseph Willoughby.
6. Joel Lewis, Jr., married Frances Goodwin.
