Poet. Born in Barcelona, Spain, the only son of a prosperous family involved in textile businesses. After he finished his education and against his father‘s wishes, he refused to work in the family business. He received his degree in Law in 1884. In 1891 he married Clara Noble, and they had 13 children. The essential work of Maragall is written in Catalan language, but he also wrote in Castilian. Maragall was identified with a catholic traditionalism, following the ideas of la "Lliga Regionalista de Catalunya" (a strong Catalan national party at that time), but he never was an active politician refusing to run for the elections of the Parliament. This conservative tendency, also present in his writings, is the reason to classify him into a group of modernist writers. His work as translator to the Catalan language was very important. He translated Greek, German and French writers. In the year 1906 he was very active in the "Congrés de la Llengua Catalana" (Catalan Language Congress) and later he was a founder of the "Secció Filològica de l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans" (Philological Section of the Catalan Studies Institute - The Catalan language Academy). In 1911 he published the "Sequences" in which he showed a vital exaltation, coming back to a heterodox position softened in previous writings. He died in Barcelona, Spain that same year.
