Robert Bond was the son of William Bond and Harriet (Scott) Bond. Born in Carrollton, Kentucky, he was the brother of Samuel, John C Bond Sr, Mary J, James A, Julia T, and Benjamin Franklin Bond.

Robert Bond enlisted in the Civil War at the age of 26, providing his own horse. He served until the final surrender as Sargeant of his company. He was one of forty soldiers who would not surrender on Kentucky soil, but surrendered at Woodstock , Georgia. These soldeirs were allowed to retain their horses and sidearms. He rode home on the same horse that he had furnished and which was with him the entire time of his service.
When he returned from the war, his brother John C. gave him two foxhounds named "Loud" and "Gray", for his favorite sport, fox hunting. One of these dogs, "Loud", won the silver Champion Collar of Kentucky, March 1867.

He married Martha Jane Ramey on May 22, 1872 and they had the following children: Maynie Laura, Margaret Ramey, Julia Francis, James Dorothy, and Richard Frank Bond.
He later was a founding director of the American Saddlebred Horse Association, registering 21 of these horses according to the first four volumes of the registry. His favorite horse was "Gay Denmark 2nd", and he was very proud of him.

Robert Bond was a member of Camp Barrett U.C.V. of Carrollton, Kentucky. He also was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carrollton.

One of his obituaries read " Mr Bond was as polished as a gentleman as he was a gallant soldier. He was honorable in his dealings with all, and charitable to a fault; no worthy person was allowed to suffer if he could be of any relief. His home and hospitality were synonymous. His latch-string hung out. It would be nearer to the truth to say his doors stood wide open."
