Harry was the son of George Bartley Wickersham and Lylian Arwilda Guthrie Wickersham. George and Lylian were first cousins. Coming from a Quaker background they were not on good terms with her parents for marrying first cousins. George was her mother's brother; Harlan Wickersham's, son. Harry was represented as being adopted all his life until Lylian, Lylian's brother Emor Guthrie, and their parents had died. At Emor's funeral, Stella Fox Guthrie; Emor's wife, told my grandmother; Hellen Kelley Payton and repeated to me by my mother; Ruth Payton Anastas, that Harry was truely my grandfather; Jacob Albert Payton's, natural half-brother. There was no reason to make the story up, but we will never know unless the adoption papers- if there are any, are public. Harry's marriage record states he was born in Waynesburg, Ohio.
Lylian was a woman of many secrets. Jacob Albert Payton grew up not knowing that Lylian was his father's second wife and that he had 3 other half brothers and sisters on the Payton side until after his parents were dead. Harry Wickersham was a laundryman for the State Hospital for the Insane, Clarinda, Iowa in 1910, but by 1917 he was an Inspector, Ford Motor Company, Woodward Ave., Highland Park, Wayne, Michigan. He was married first to Mary Spangler who died in 1943, and then to a Pauline. Little else is known about his life as there was such an age difference between him and my grandfather. A sad and puzzling story.
