Dr. Thomas Tiffin Bowstead, 84, DeWitt, Iowa, died Friday morning, June 18, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa.

Thomas Tiffin Bowstead, the son of Thomas Tiffin and Madelyn May nee Harrington Bowstead, was born in DeWitt, Iowa on April 21, 1920. He graduated from DeWitt High School and received his degree in Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1944.

Dr. Bowstead served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon graduating he established his veterinary practice in Riverside, Iowa, where in November 20, 1945 he united in marriage to Mary Kathleen Knittel.

In 1949, he moved with his family to DeWitt and continued the practice of Veterinary Medicine for 60 years. He served on the Clinton County Extension Board for two terms and was active with the Clinton County 4-H and FFA. He was one of the first to organize the Little League Baseball in DeWitt, and favored the Chicago Cubs throughout his entire lifetime. Dr. Bowstead was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. He was also a member of the American Angus Association and the Eastern Iowa Angus Association. For several years, he and his family enjoyed showing purebred angus cattle.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Kathleen; four children, Thomas Tiffin Bowstead III, MD and his wife Denise, Daly City, California; Paul Leonard Bowstead, Salt Lake City, Utah; Ann Elizabeth Garrity and her husband, Leo, DeWitt; David Joseph Bowstead and his wife, Barbara, Bettendorf, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Amy Jo Fratzke and her husband, Darin, Harlan, Iowa; Lee Allen Bowstead, Monticello, Iowa; Cassie Ann Dunlavey and her husband, Jeff, Delmar, Iowa; Lee Owen Garrity, DeWitt; Anthony David Bowstead, Davenport, Iowa; Sunne Francesca Bowstead and fiancee, Sean McGinn, Davenport; Christopher Ethan Bowstead, New York, New York, and Amanda Paige Bowstead, San Fransisco, California; two great-grandchildren, Emma Fratzke and Drew Dunlavey; a sister, Grace Milroy and her husband, Boyd, Vinton, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a son, Mark Allen Bowstead, a granddaughter, Nicole Kathleen Garrity and three brothers, Dr. Leonard Bowstead, Dr. Warren Bowstead and Emerson Bowstead Sr.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004 and from 9 until 10:15 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. Liturgy of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church. The Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness officiating. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.

Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
