Thomas died at Whitby, in Ontario (now Durham) County. He is buried in the south Presbyterian section B. He does not have a headstone.

He was married March 16, 1839, at Pickering, Durham Co., Ontario, to Elizabeth Bates, the daughter of Ezra and Hannah Bates.

In 1826 Thomas was a Sergeant, in Company 8, 1st Northumberland Militia Regiment, commanded by his father.

Thomas lived in Whitby Village, where prior to 1847 he owned a hotel. It was a rough-cast structure, built pre-1828 and destroyed in 1990, and located at the northeast corner of Dundas and Euclid Streets.

In 1846 Thomas took out a tavern license for Whitby, and in 1847 built a new 2 1/2 story brick hotel and tavern named "Whitby House" but referred to as "Scripture's Inn." It was located at the southeast corner of Byron and Dundas Streets, and occupied a half acre of land, having a carriage house containing 7 carriages. The business required him to employ 4 employees. After Thomas died it was sold in 1863 to George Robson, and subsequently destroyed in 1891.

Besides the children listed having memorials Thomas and Elizabeth had:
* Thomas Nelson Scripture, born September 7, 1845, in Ontario, died February 5, 1909, at Toronto, Ontario.
*Emma Scripture, born 1851, at Whitby, Ontario, died pre-1906, at Chicago, Illinois(?)
*George Scripture, born 1860, at Whitby, Ontario, died pre-1871, at Whitby, Ontario.
