William's death certificate may be seen in both familysearch.org and ancestry.com. His date of birth on that certificate was given as April 3, 1856. The year on his stone is 1855. According to his obituary, he was 79-years-old when he died, and if that is correct, he would have been born in 1854. I do not know for certain which information is correct. For the purposes of this memorial, I am using the year on his stone.

William C. Smith married Sarah M. Carter on July 23, 1876, in Wapello County, Iowa.

Also, the times of death in the obituary and the funeral service notice, both of which I have transcribed below, are different. According to his death certificate, he died at 1 p.m. I have transcribed the articles as written.
