Born in Jersey City, Howard was raised in Hasbrouck Heights and graduated from Hasbrouck Heights High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. He often referred to himself as having graduated from the "University of Parris Island." Howard was employed by N.J. Bell Telephone Co. for 35 years, retiring as district manager in 1983. He then worked for Extel Communications as director of agency sales until 1995, at which time he retired full-time and moved from Saddle Brook to Stillwater.
A member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Howard was also a member of Pfc. Jeffrey S. Patterson Marine Corps League Detachment 747, a member of the NRA, and a member of the Stillwater Township Taxpayers Association.
The son of the late Howard A. and Bessie (Newkirk) Ellis, Howard was predeceased by Barbara (Brandell) Ellis, the mother of his children. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Ruth; his daughter, Debra Waldron and husband, Michael, of Blairstown; two sons, R. Craig Ellis, of Belvidere, and H. Scott Ellis and wife, Patricia McSally, of Basking Ridge; three grandchildren, Michael Waldron, Jr., and wife, Katherine; Lauren Allen and husband, Timothy; and Mattison Ellis; and one stepdaughter, Lisa Taranto, of Sinking Spring, Pa.
Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church in Swartswood. Interment will follow in Stillwater Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, April 24, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
