John Harold Hopkins, 86, and Frances E. Hopkins, 85, of Nutmeg Circle, died Sept. 7, 2005, and Sept. 3, 2005, respectively, at Florida Hospital-DeLand. They were married for 62 years. A funeral service for the couple was held Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Allen-Summerhill Memorial Chapel, 126 E. New York Ave. in DeLand, with the Rev. Charles A. Burkey officiating. Mr. Hopkins retired as a camouflage engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Later, he was a consultant to the Brunswick Corp. in DeLand. Mr. Hopkins was born in Barberton, Ohio, and Mrs. Hopkins was born in Canton, Ohio. The couple moved to DeLand in 1976 from Falls Church, VA. Mr. Hopkins served in the U.S. Army during World War II and later served in the Army Reserve for many years, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was a member of the West Volusia Retired Officers Club and the DeLand Lions Club. Mrs. Hopkins was a member of the Morning Glory Garden Club in DeLand and the West Volusia Retired Officersʼ Wives Club, and a 15-year volunteer with Meals of Wheels. The couple are survived by three sons, Roger M. of Warrenton, Va., John Philip of Fairfax County, Va., and William Randolph of Vero Beach; one daughter, Viki June Hopkins McKenzie of Westland, Mich.; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.
