Brian D. Mahoney, age 64, died Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at his home in Kankakee, Illinois. He was born in Kankakee to Lawrence Alfred and Kate (Simmons) Mahoney.

He was a United States Army veteran and served in Germany with the Military Police on a special detail to then NATO Commander General Alexander Haig.

Brian began a law enforcement career that spanned several decades. He joined the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Department in 1977 and served for eight years. Brian then was accepted into the Illinois State Police Academy on April 15, 1985.

His assignment with the Illinois State Police as a trooper took him to District 5, Joliet where he spent most of his career. During his tenure with the state police, he supervised the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad (MANS) in Joliet. He retired with 24 years of service at the rank of Master Sergeant on April 30, 2009.

In his free time, Brian enjoyed working with animals, collecting art, German Hummel and English Wedgewood ceramics.

Brian is survived by his three sisters; Jacqueline Hamann of Clifton, Karen Mahoney of Clifton, Brenda (Henry) Blackwell of Peoria, sister-in-law Judith Mahoney of Bourbonnais and three brothers Lawrence Mahoney of Clifton, Bruce (Rene) Mahoney of Kankakee and Kevin Mahoney of Tampa, Florida. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews: Michele Mahoney (Paul) Davenport of Sparks, Nevada, Melanie Mahoney, (Steve) Boudreau, Bourbonnais, Stephanie Mahoney (Todd) Hanson, Ashkum, Jamie Mahoney of Kankakee, Jenna Schnell of Chicago, Heather Lawrence of Spring Hill, Florida, Kyle Cieszkiewicz of St. Louis and Adam Cieszkiewicz of Durham, North Carolina and his aunts, Elaine Pankey and Lois Mahoney. Many friends, including long-time co-workers in the law enforcement community also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Michael Mahoney.

Visitation: April 27, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton, Illinois.

Memorial Service: April 28, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Knapp Funeral Home.

Interment will be at St Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Clifton. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley.
