Married Jennifer Trower, February 10, 1979, daughter of Gordon Turner Trower and Margaret Craib (McPhee) Trower.

Chebeague Island - Leon A. Hamilton, 67, passed away on March 29, 2015 at his winter home on Pine Island, Florida, after a long and fierce battle with lung cancer.

He was born on Feb. 5, 1948, in Portland, ME, son of Leland M. and Elsie (Ross) Hamilton. Leon grew up on Chebeague Island, attended island schools and graduated from Greely High School in 1966. He joined the Navy after graduation and subsequently served in the U. S. Coast Guard, after a stint with the Portland Fire Department. Leon captained the Coast Guard boat that laid power cable and service to lighthouses along the coast of Maine. He served in the Middle East during Operation Desert Storm, ending his career as a Chief Petty Officer.

Leon was a lobsterman throughout his life, starting at a very early age by helping his father. He ended his career with a recreational license to catch more than enough for a feast at any given time. He was a Captain for the Chebeague Transportation Company for 15 years, running the ferry and barge. Leon also operated Reel Deal Sport Fishing, a deep sea fishing company, which enabled him to continue his love of fishing on the open ocean. His last working venture involved transporting workers from Harpswell to Snow Island in his boat "Greta and Sean".

Leon was outspoken in his opinions regarding Island politics and was elected to the Transition Committee, later serving as Selectman for the newly formed "Town of Chebeague Island".

His spare time was spent hunting, fishing, clamming, cheering on the New England Patriots, and doting on his grandchildren, Greta and Sean. In recent years he discovered the pleasure of fishing in the shallow waters off the Florida coast.

Leon was a generous, kind, humorous, straight-shooting man. He is widely remembered for his welcoming smile. He will be so missed by so many.
Leon is survived by his wife, Jennifer (Trower) Hamilton; brother Sherman (Teri) Hamilton; sisters Lois (Bob) Cafmeyer and Holly (Bob) Dixon; sister-in-law Martha Trower; step-daughter Jessica (Rich) Jackson Fleck; step-son Benjamin Jackson; grandchildren Greta Fleck and Sean Fleck, along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, twin brother Leland, and sister, Loretta Parker.

Visiting hours will be held at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, Maine on Friday, April 17, 2015 from 4 to 6 pm. A memorial service will take place at Chebeague Island Methodist Church on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 1 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Island Commons, 132 Littlefield Rd., Chebeague Island, ME 04017.
