Shirley May (Schmelzlen) Kimmel, 85 of Altoona died Friday April 3, 2015 at her residence.
She was born May 20, 1929 in Altoona a daughter of the late Herman F. and Pearl M. (Burns) Schmelzlen. She married John J. Kimmel on June 30, 1947 in Lakemont.
Surviving are her husband; five children, daughters Sandra L. Kendell of Canada; Mary Jean Jones and Sharon A. Wingard both of Altoona; sons Dennis A. Kimmel of Tucson, AZ and Kenneth W. Kimmel of Grove, OK; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by brothers Harry, Robert and Kenneth Schmelzlen and sister Pearl Detrick.
Mrs. Kimmel was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altoona where she served as an altar server.
She was a 1947 graduate of Altoona High School.
Shirley was a volunteer at Valley View Home and at the Altoona Hospital. She was a member of the R.S.V. P.
She enjoyed traveling and doll collecting.
Friends will be received from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday April 9, 2015 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a vigil service for the deceased will be held.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday April 10, 2015 at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altoona with Rev. Ronald V. Osinski officiating. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3544 North Progress Avenue, Suite 205, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 East Pleasant Valley Boulevard, Altoona, PA 16602.
