Dr. Dan Clinton Armstrong, Sr. 90, passed away March 28, 2015 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN.
He was a former resident of Gate City, VA and most recently Deltona, FL. Dr. Armstrong was born June 12, 1924 in Knoxville, TN to Ruth Burkhart Armstrong and Darak Armstrong.
He served as a signalman in the U.S. Navy during WWII, traveling the world. After the war ended, he returned to Knoxville and entered the University of Tennessee, earning a degree in Business Administration, graduating in 1950.
After many years in the business world, he changed direction and entered Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta GA, graduating in 1967. He served as Pastor of Southminster Presbyterian Church (USA), College Park, GA for fifteen years. He was a Chaplain at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, and Social Services Director, Atlanta Union Mission (a mission for homeless men) also in Atlanta. He and his wife, Faith also owned and operated a private counseling center (The Turning Point), in East Point, GA. In 1980, Dr. Armstrong was awarded a doctorate from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL. In the late 1980’s he was certified by the University of Georgia as a drug and alcohol counselor. After retiring from the Presbyterian Church (USA) he entered the political arena at 69, running as a Democrat for the GA State Senate, Fayette County, GA, winning his primary. He ran a second time two years later.
In 1993, he and his wife moved to the North Georgia mountains, Clayton, GA where he pastored two churches (Tiger and Timpson Presbyterian) (USA). In 1999 the Armstrong’s moved to Gate City, VA. For a while, he pastored First Presbyterian Church, Gate City and was active in the Scott County Democratic Party. After 2000, he devoted most of his time to writing books, poetry and various published articles in magazines and newspapers. He was author of, Laughter in The Blue Mist, a memoir of his childhood during the Great Depression. A second book, Flags, a memoir of his WWII naval experiences will be published posthumously.
Dr. Armstrong is survived by his wife of thirty years, Faith Dowdy Armstrong. Also survived by three adult children from an earlier marriage, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Also a sister, a brother, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private committal service with military honors was held on April 1, 2015, with interment at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, TN
