Mr. Daniel Carl “D.C.” Lawrence, 79, of Bermuda Run, NC, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Lawrence was born on February 2, 1936 in Ashe County, NC to the late Coy Harding Lawrence and Ellie Mae Main Lawrence. He attended Farmington High School. D.C. began working in the building business in 1955 and attained his Unlimited General Contractor License. He was instrumental in developing and building of Rollingreen, Nestleway Acres, Westley Forest, Parkfield Lane, Arden Circle, Country Cove and others. Some of the buildings D.C. built were Clemmons Village Shopping Center, Clemmons Village Apartments, Village Inn and Conference Center (formerly Ramada Inn and Windjammer), an addition to Clemmons First Baptist Church and other buildings around Clemmons and in Winston-Salem. D.C. and his wife, Sue owned and operated the Ramada Inn in Clemmons. Mr. Lawrence was a long-time member of Clemmons First Baptist Church where he was an ordained Deacon and served on several committees. He was selected to appear in Outstanding Young Men of America in 1965. D.C. was a charter member of Clemmons Jaycees and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 1971. He served as President of the Winston-Salem Home Builders Association and both Secretary and state director of the North Carolina Home Builders Association. D.C. also served on the board of directors for Gardner Webb College and was elected to serve on the board of directors for Northwestern Bank which later became First Union and then Wachovia Bank. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lawrence was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Dale Lawrence and Donald Gray Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sue Caudle Lawrence of the home; one son, Danny Lawrence and wife, Lori Phillips Lawrence of Advance, NC; daughter-in-law, Jo Ann “Jody” Durham Lawrence of Clemmons, NC; two grandchildren, Amanda Lawrence and Steven Chambers and wife, Christen; one great-grandson, Lawrence Chambers; two brothers, George Lawrence and wife, Glenda and Clay Lawrence and wife, Gaye, all of Mocksville, NC; business partners and friends, Leslie and Glenda Frye; and special friends, Robert and Ann Johnson of Advance, NC and Bob and Elizabeth Mize of Maryville, TN. Funeral services for Mr. Lawrence will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Clemmons First Baptist Church with Dr. Robby Phillips officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
