Mary was born in 1860, Hamilton County, Ohio. She was born of German emigrant parents, and had four brothers, and six sisters, one sister died in infancy. The infant was Mary's twin. About 1865, after the Civil War, her family moved near Belleveiw, Jefferson County, Indiana. Her father had lived there when he first came to America in the 1840s.

Mary's cousin, Caroline Housefield, who lived on the farm adjacent to her father's farm, married Michael Oehler. He was Belleview's blacksmith and postmaster. Mike's brother, William Joseph (Bill Oehler) was living with them, and working as a wagonmaker in Belleview. Bill & Mary later married in Cincinnati and had five children. Their names were Joseph William Oehler, b. 1886; Rosina, 1891; Mary Louise, 1894; Otillda and Zetta Oehler. Rosina was the wife of Frank Dolehi; Mary, w/o Charles Brown.

Bill Oehler retired from the railroad, and died in 1928. Mary lived alternately with her son Joseph & daughter Mary. She died in Bromley, KY, at the advanced age of nearly 94 years.
