ROBERT VAN ESSEN

Robert Van Essen, son of Nicholas Van Essen and Anna Hiemstra, was born on a farm near Otley on February 4, 1892. He was married to Hendrieka Hiemstra March 5, 1913, on a farm near Monroe, Iowa. To this union one son, Nicholas Roy, was born.

At the age of 17 years he made profession of faith at the Otley Reformed Church and with the exception of seven years that his membership was transferred to the Prairie City Reformed Church, he has continued to be a member of this church, always loyal and faithful in attendance.

Death came suddenly following surgery at the Mercy Hospital in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on Wednesday evening, May 9, 1956, he having reached the age of 64 years, 3 months, and 5 days. Surviving beside his wife and son, Nicholas Roy, is one grandchild, Nora Joan, and the following brothers and sisters: John Van Essen of Chicago, Ill.; Martin Van Essen of Prairie City; Otto Van Essen of Otley; Henry Van Essen of Pella; Artie, Mrs. Arnold Hiemstra, of Otley; Marie, Mrs. Govert Kamerick of Pella; and Emma Van Essen of Pella.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Frank and Arthur, ahd one sister and two brothers in infancy.

During all his years he was always a kind and loving husband and father and his place will always be missed in the home and community.

Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, May 12, 1956, from the family home in Otley at 1:00 p.m. and the Otley Reformed Church at 1:30 with the Rev. Lester W. Muller in charge. Burial was made in the Graceland Cemetery at Pella, Iowa.
