Sheriff Sherd Dean Parker of Porter, passed this life on Monday April 20, 2015 at his home in Porter, at the age of 93.

Sherd was born in Porter on December 11, 1921 to Sherd Dean Parker Sr and Ribbie (Ray) Parker.

Sherd was born in the Porter area where he worked on the family farm most of his life with his father until he met his wife Ester, who lived just west of U.S Hwy 69 where the Arkansas River bridge, on a trip to town. Sherd and Ester married and had eight children Carolyn, Shirley, Elizabeth, Ribbie, Sherd III, Lonzella, Betty Sue, and Nola Parker. Sherd also has 19 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren.

Sherd began his law enforcement career in 1952 for Sheriff Noel Chote, Sheriff Bob Mahan and also worked as a investigator for District Attorney John Russell Jr. Sherd was appointed Sheriff in June of 1980 to finish a term when Sheriff Tom Gilbert resigned Parker continued to be Sheriff until January of 1981, Sherd was the first African American Sheriff in Oklahoma and was the only African American Sheriff for Wagoner County. Sherd worked for Wagoner County for a total of 26 years. Sherd was also a road foreman for Leroy Denton and Pat Boyd for District 3 County Commissioners. Sherd also farmed in Porter with his son Sherd Parker III. Lonzella tells me Sherd and his son farmed hay, wheat and ran a cattle operation.

Sherd is a life member of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church and served on the county agricultural, stabilization, and conservation service for 45 years. Sherd also served on the county soil conservation board.

Sherd loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

Sherd is preceded in death by his mother Ribbie Harrison Parker, father, Sherd Parker Sr. daughters Carolyn, Shirley, Betty Sue, and Nola Parker.

Sherd is survived by his daughters Lonzella, Elizabeth, Ribbie, and son Sherd III as well as 19 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren, other family members and dear friends.

Sherd was respected and well-liked member of the community and will be greatly missed by so many.

Services will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, May 1 at the First Assembly of God in Wagoner for Sherd Parker Jr, 93, of Porter.

Interment will be in Mt. Bethel Cemetery under the direction of Shipman Funeral Home and Crematory in Wagoner.

Parker died Monday, April 20 at his home.

Parker was born December 11, 1921 in the Porter area to Sherd Parker Sr and Ribbie (Ray) Parker. He worked on the family farm.

He and his wife Esther were married and they had eight children.

Parker began his law enforcement career in 1952, working for Sheriff Noal Choate and Sheriff Bob Mahan. He also worked as a investigator for District Attorney John Russell Jr.

He was appointed as Wagoner County Sheriff in June of 1980 to complete a term when Sheriff Tom Gilbert resigned. He continued in that capacity until January of 1981.

Parker was Oklahoma’s first black sheriff and is the only black sheriff for Wagoner County.

He worked for Wagoner County for a total of 26 years, also serving as a road foreman for District 3 Commissioners Leroy Denton and Pat Boyd.
