Robert was a son of John Edwin Wheeler (1890-1965) and Mary Herndon Wheeler (1892-1980). He graduated from Texas A&I College at Kingsville, Texas in 1939 with a BS in Secondary Education. After teaching and coaching for a year or two, he became a Commander in the U.S. Navy. He was at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese invasion on December 7, 1941. His ship, the minesweeper USS Preble, was in dry dock being refitted at the time of the invasion. On November 15, 1957, Robert was tragically killed in a deer hunting accident near Sonoita, Arizona. He had been living in Tucson, Arizona and had previously been employed by Hughes Aircraft Co. He was survived by one daughter, Susan Roby Wheeler.
