Karen G. Kahler, 72, of Longview died May 1, 2013, under Hospice care at a local adult care facility.

She was born July 15, 1940, in Aberdeen to William and Louise (Pinckney) Jacka.

She married Ray E. Kahler Aug. 25, 1962, in Aberdeen. He survives her at home. Also surviving are a son, Ray. W. Kahler (Callie) of Aberdeen; a daughter, Kristine Gardner (George) of Longview; a brother, Alan Jacka (Joan) of Everett; a sister, Jeri Bell (Darrell) of Aberdeen; three nephews; a niece; and numerous cousins.

Karen graduated from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen in 1958. She received her associate's degree from Grays Harbor College in 1960 and a bachelor of arts degree in education from Western Washington State College in 1962. Ray and Karen started their teaching careers in Moses Lake, Wash., in 1962, where she taught fourth grade at Northlake Elementary. In fall 1963 they returned to Bellingham, where she taught third grade at Silver Lake Elementary. They moved to Longview in the fall of 1964, and Karen taught second grade at Kessler Elementary for three years. She then became the school librarian at Robert Gray Elementary for two years then transferred to Columbia Valley Gardens Elementary for the 1969-1970 school year. She resigned at the end of the school year to start raising her family.

Karen was a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Delta Kappa Gamma and Junior Service League. She also was active in Longview Community Church, in which she served on the board of deacons and was a member of the community Bible class. Her children were her pride and joy, and she spent many hours volunteering at their schools as they progressed through the Longview School District. Karen also served as a volunteer for many charitable and civic organizations, including United Way, American Cancer Society, Community Concert Association and March of Dimes.

Karen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1984. She will be remembered for her kind heart and generosity.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. May 18 in the Gilbert Chapel of Longview Community Church. Private interment will take place at Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen.
