Francis Eugene "Gene" Connors, 92, of Galesburg, died at 12:05 p.m., Monday, April 20, 2015 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg.

Gene was born October 19, 1922 in Vandalia, the son of Peter Thomas and Mary Magdeline Lacey Connors. After graduating high school, Gene attended Notre Dame after he enlisted into the US Navy during WWII. He was united in marriage to Margaret Leona Somers on May 19, 1951 in Moline. Gene is survived by his wife of almost 64 years, Margaret of Galesburg; two sons, James (Rebecca) of Galesburg and John of St. Thomas, USVI; two daughters, Mary (Doug) Witting of Griffith, IN and Teresa (Peter) Deeman of Elmhurst; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah Connors. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William Lacey Connors.

Gene went to work in 1962 as a mechanical engineer for Weber, Griffith, and Mellican. He retired in 1987. Following retirement, Gene and Margaret moved to Venice, FL. While living in Florida, Gene enjoyed playing shuffleboard, he loved to spend time at the ocean, going for walks on the beach and swimming. They returned to Galesburg in 2009. Gene was a devout Catholic and member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He belonged to the horseshoe club for 20 years in Galesburg. He always enjoyed a good card game. He played baseball and softball when he was younger and was an avid sports fan. He especially enjoyed watching Notre Dame, the Cubs, and the Bears. He will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

The rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m. Friday, April 24, 2015 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg, with visitation following from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Rev. Msgr. Ernest Pizzamiglio and Gene's nephew, Fr. Michael Connors will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Galesburg where military rites will be conducted. Memorials may be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
