On the 1860 Dist. 7, Rockbridge County, Virginia census, I found farmer Lewis P Davis, 43; other Davises: Minerva, 30; Mariah, 12; Mary E, 9; SARAH B, 7; Estiline V, 5 and Mildred A, 2, all Virginia born.
On 23 Aug 1872 Bessie Gillock was born in Rockbridge, Virginia to parents John Jacob Gillock and Sallie Rosa Lee Gillock. 1872 Rockbridge, Virginia Birth Register on Familysearch.
On the 1880 Lexington, VA census, I found US Internal Rev Officer John J. Gillock, 34; wife Sallie R. Gillock, 27; sons/daus: Ada G. Gillock,9; Bessie R. Gillock, 7; James W. Gillock, 6; Harry Gillock, 4; Sallie E. Gillock, 3 and John D. Gillock, 3, all VA born.
Sallie died 5 Apr 1884. Her husband John remarried in 1885 to Rebecca Motherspaw.
On the 1900 Lexington, VA census, I found John Gillock, 56, Mar 1844, married 14 years to Rebeckia, 34, Apr 1866; son Ross F., 13, Jun 1886; dau Nellie A., 11, Jun 1888; son Rue L., (Robert) 8, Oct 1891 and son Albert H., 18, Sep 1881, all VA born.
Her daughter Ada Graham married Joseph B. Driscoll, the son of A. and M. Driscoll, on 24 Jun 1891 in E. Lexington, Rockbridge, Virginia.
Her son Albert Holland Gillock married Miss Eva May Burruss, both of E. Lexington, on 26 Aug 1908, at the home of Mr Jos S Womeldorf, with whom the lady has been making her home. Rev. J.A. Trostic officiated. Mr. Gillock is rural mail carrier on one of the routes running out of Lexington. His bride is quite pretty, and has numerous friends whose goodwill she possesses. 27 Aug 1908 The Times Dispatch (Richmond, VA).
"Deaths. Mrs. Gillock, wife of Mr. John GIllock at the river, died of meningittis last Saturday. She leaves a husband and 8 helpless children to mourn her loss. Thhe funeral was preached at the house Sunday, by Rev. Dr. Taylor, and her remains interred in the town cemetery.-Rockbridge Enterprise." Valley Virginian (VA) dated 17 April 1884 (see photo).
