David Willard Brown, 60, was born 4 Apr 1833 in a farm near Middlebury, Vermont, to Jonathan Browne (31 Mar 1795–3 Apr 1861) and Rosella Fox (6 Aug 1799–12 Aug 1874). He died 3 Jan 1894 in Cumberland County, Illinois. He is buried in Kingman–Cline Long Point Cemetery in Neoga, Cumberland County. A family legend is that David Willard Brown dropped the "e" from his surname Browne.

On 2 Jan 1859 David Willard Brown married Catharine “Kate” Wilbert (29 0ct 1833–12 Feb 1918) in Annapolis, Crawford County, Illinois. Catharine Wilbert was the daughter of Peter Wilbert (26 Mar 1809–28 Feb 1891) and Magdalina Rheim (5 Mar 1806–14 Apr 1887). Catharine was born in Ebingen, part of Albstadt, district Zollernalbkreis, in Baden-Württemberg.

Born of this marriage were seven children.

1. Alice Rosella Brown. Born 11 Jun 1860 in Annapolis, Crawford County, Illinois; died 5 Jul 1943 in Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois. On Sep 1887 she married William Alexander Needham (12 Jul 1862–17 Jun 1940) in Neoga, Cumberland County, Illinois.

2. Horace Wilbert Brown. Born 1 Aug 1863 in Annapolis, Crawford County, Illinois, and died 23 Aug 1942 in Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois. Horace was a doctor. He married Nora Louise Rawlins Brown (31 May 1892 - 19 Mar 1940. They resided in Chattanooga, TN. He is buried in Roselawn Cemetery, Urbana, Illinois.

3. Walter Samuel Brown. Born 9 Sep 1865 in Annapolis, Crawford County, Illinois, and died 18 Oct 1921 in Perks, Pulaski County, Illinois. The 1920 US Federal Census Family records indicate he was a widower; however, no information has been found to identify the name of his spouse. An Illinois State record identifies the date of his death as 21 Oct 1921 and his burial place as Neoga, Illinois. An entry in the “Fleetwood's Life of Christ” in which family records were entered states that Walter Samuel Brown “died in 1921” and “murder S. Ill – Perks.”

4. James Irving Brown. Born 20 Nov 1867 in Neoga, Illinois, and died in 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. In some Census records, his name is spelled Irvin instead of Irving. In 1895 he married Bertha Williams (27 Jul 1867–27 Mar 1941). According to the US Federal Census reports for 1920 and 1930, they resided in Chicago, Illinois. An entry by Catharine Wilbert Brown in the family record "Fleetwood's Life of Christ" confirms the given name of James Irving Brown, not Irving James Brown. This entry identifies his birth date as 20 Nov 1867 and his time of birth as seven o’clock on Friday morning. Various records indicate that James Irving Brown used the name Irving James Brown, and his marker with the name Irving James Brown with the dates 1867-1948 has been observed in the Fairmount-Willow Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.

5. Lena Caroline “Carrie” Brown. Born 11 Jan 1870 in Neoga, Illinois and died 1946 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA. On 25 Dec 1890, she married Fred Albert Malcolm (1868-1947 buried in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa). They resided in Greenfield, Iowa. Carrie is buried in the Chapel Hill Cemetery, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.

6. Charles Willard Brown. Born 5 Nov 1871 in Neoga, Cumberland County, Illinois, and died 3 Nov 1950. He was single and resided in Wewoka, Seminole County, OK.

7. Philip Wendell Brown. Born 31 Oct 1878 in Neoga, Illinois, and died in 6 Dec 1935 in Wewonka, OK. In 1898 he married Roby Jeanette Thayer (born Sep 1875 in Neoga and died 1958 in Tulsa, OK). Excerpts from "City Architect" by Carrie Needham Brown, 1980. “My Grandparents: My German grandmother on my mother's side who was Kate [Catharine] Wilbert; her husband was David Willard Browne. He was a farmer, and a "visiting-dentist," always interested in matters of health. In his proposal of marriage he wanted Kate to promise to do without tea, coffee, and corsets until all of their children were born. On her saying that she would think it over he said that she must answer immediately. So she laughed and said, 'Yes.' She had seven healthy children: my mother, Alice, was the first, followed by Horace, Walter, Irving [James Irving Brown], Carrie [Lena Caroline Brown], Charles, and Phillip. Grandmother Kate was lame in one leg from falling from a table at about the age of four. Her parents didn't want her to suffer from an operation to have the leg fixed (there was no anesthesia yet.) But she became, nonetheless, a good dancer, and made herself comfortable by wearing stylish dresses with the stays sewn in, instead of wearing tight corsets. Her family was originally Lutheran but later 'fell in' with the Methodists. Her family remarked that the Methodists, while not believing in dancing, had quite lively, danceable hymn-tunes; whereas the Lutherans were allowed to dance, but their religious hymns were very sedate. After Kate had become a Methodist, her son urged her to dance with him at his 16th birthday party. She refused at first but finally agreed to dance across the room with him. When the church found out about her dancing, they were going to expel her so she went over to the Presbyterian Church. Although she was invited to return to the Methodist Church, she and the whole Browne family remained Presbyterian. Family legend is that he was related to the founder of the Quaker Church."

Marguerite “Margie” Needham Rarick (20 Jul 1898–28 Feb 1977) wrote the following on the back of a photo of David Willard Brown: “English descent from Vermont. Photo about 1890. Dentist. Ahead of his time – drainage farming. ‘The most gallant man I have ever known’ said daughter Alice Rosella Brown Needham. Impulsive – loved the finest – utter respect for womankind. ‘As Alice grew he adored her more and more’ said Horace W. Brown of Alice while at 1210 University Avenue, Urbana, Illinois, to Margie. He saw Lucile, Wilbert, Carrie [that is, his daughter Lena Caroline Brown] in Champion, Chase County, Neb, but died soon after return to Neoga, Ill …..”

David Willard Brown’s parents Jonathan Browne (1795–3 Apr 1861) and Rosella (Rozilla) Fox (6 Aug 1799-18 Aug 1874) had ten children:
