PITTSVILLE — Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. today at Pittsville for George W. Severns, 83, a native of this vicinity, and former Wood County surveyor for 40 years. Burial was in Mound Cemetery.
Mr. Severns died Wednesday at the Bethel Convalescent Home, Arpin, where he had been a patient for the past month. He had been in poor health for more than year.
Members of the Wood County Board of Supervisors and county officers attended the services in a body, honoring the man who had served as county surveyor continuously from 1914 until 1950 when he was forced to retire because of his age. He was first appointed to that county office in 1901, serving until 1905, then being elected again in 1914.
Born Dec. 11, 1868, at Pittsville, he attended school at Pittsville and learned surveying from his father, James.
In 1905 he moved to Oklahoma, later going to British Columbia, Can. In 1907 he was married to Miss Marie Draxler at Auburndale, the couple living in British Columbia until 1910 when they returned to make their permanent home at Pittsville.
Mr. Severns Is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. E. R. Drexler, Wausau, and two grandchildren.
