Verla May Kinney Smyth was born in Boise, Idaho on June 16, 1924. Not long after her birth, her mother Zella Sabina Wardle and her father Edward Kinney were divorced. A year later, Zella Sabina married Ole Reiton who had four children of his own. Together, they had two girls and four boys.

When Verla was 13 years old her mother went to court and had guardianship of Verla changed to her father Edward Kinney. He came and got her when school was out for the summer and they moved to Anaconda, Montana.

Verla married George Smyth on her 18th birthday at the courthouse in Anaconda. George and Verla had seven children: Patricia Ellen (David) Goddard of Salmon, Idaho, Chadwick Edward Smyth of California, Timothy Rollins Smyth of Sacramento, California, Judith Ann Smyth, Sera Janine (Richard) Sloan of Sheridan, Montana, Andrew Paul (Juanita) Smyth, of Gooding, Idaho and Michael Steven Smyth.

Judith died at three months of age from a birth defect and Michael at 26 years old.

When George retired from the Anaconda smelter at 62, they moved to Wickenburg, Arizona. They lived in Wickenburg, Deer Lodge, Waterloo, Montana, Phoenix, Arizona, Newport, Oregon and Salmon, Idaho.

George died in 1985 at the age of 82; they had celebrated 43 years of marriage. After Michael’s death, Verla got custody of her three granddaughters and raised them in Salmon. Verla has 18 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

George and Verla were both baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1955. Verla loved Jehovah God and looked forward to being resurrected to a Paradise earth governed by Jesus Christ under his Kingdom rule.
