Henry Arthur Bates was born August 8, 1916 in Denver, Colorado to John Henry Bates Jr. (1888-1956) and Rose Marie Mertes (1893-1967). He had two sisters. Dorothy Mary Aquinas Bates (1912-2004); Lucille Rose Mae Bates (1914-1950). Harry married Joann Geneva Comistaci in 1941. Harry was in the United States Navy for 10 years (1936-1946) and was a Pearl Harbor Survivor. They had twin daughters in 1949. Joann preceded Harry in death by 19 years.
