Matthias (Mathias) was born about 1742 in Orange County, Virginia, in what is now known as Madison County. Matthias married Eva Klug (about 1765), the daughter of Rev Samuel King in Virginia, and were parents to nine children.

One of Matthias' daughters married James Broyles, father of Simeon. A daughter, Grace, married Joseph Mauchinhauk in Washington, Tenn in 1807, and moved to Indiana. Joseph's brother Samuel, married Mary (Polly) Broyles, daughter of James, father of Simeon.

Like many of his brothers, Matthias owned land in Kentucky. In Tennessee, Matthias sold 524 acres (1797) of land to Thomas Williamson on the south side of Nolachucky River. Two years later sold 75 acres lying on Horse Creek.

Matthias died in Davidson County (As of 1803, this was known as Rutherford County), Tennessee by a lightning strike. He was on his way home from Indiana from visiting one of his children.

NOTES:
Locations changed names as more counties were added: Essex County formed in 1692, Spotsylvania County came from part of Essex 1721, Orange County from part of Spotsylvania 1734, Culpeper County from part of Orange 1749, Madison County from part of Culpeper in 1749.

"Tracking Andrew Fox", James H Fox, 2012 provides much detail on the Broyles' family, the land they owned in Kentucky, and their trip to what is now the State of Tennessee, as Andrew Fox traveled with Broyles family.
