He was born Sept. 11, 1943, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of James Howard and Joyce Springer Teague. He married Beth Standley in 1991 in Decatur.
Mr. Teague graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. He attended Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and earned a master's degree in public affairs reporting at Sangamon State University. He graduated with honors from the extended program in Russian language at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif. He was a U.S. Army veteran, stationed in Germany and assigned to translate intercepted Russian communications as a Russian intelligence analyst. He taught high school in Danville for two years. He retired as the public information officer for the Department of Children and Family Services in 2001 after 29 years and was executive director for the Illinois State Historical Society for 31/2 years, retiring in July 2004.
He founded and served as the first president of the Route 66 Association of Illinois; established and was the first editor of The 66 News of Illinois; conceived the Route 66 Hall of Fame in McLean; and started the Soulsby Station Society of Mount Olive. He was an executive director of the Central Illinois Blues Club, where he served as treasurer. He served on various boards, including Downtown Springfield Inc. and the Springfield Arts Council.
Survivors: wife, Beth; son, Sean (wife, Danielle) Teague of Seattle; two sisters, Rosalind Richardson of Kansas City, Mo., and Jill (husband, Kenneth) Shuck of Prescott, Ariz.; two half sisters, Tammy (husband, Michael) Stack of Kansas City, Mo., and Elizabeth of California; half brother, Howard Teague of Kansas City, Kan.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
