Plymouth - Edward W. Gilbert, 81, 624 Pennsylvania Ave., Died following a brief illness at St. Joseph's Hospital of Marshall County, Sunday, March 16, 1997, 5:05 a.m. Edward was born, the son of James M. And Mary Tarant Gilbert on January 23, 1916, in Warsaw. He had lived in Plymouth most of his life and attended Plymouth schools. In 1933, he began a 30-year employment with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He worked as a section gang mechanic and foreman, and for a brief time, he even served as a detective for the PRR. On November 6, 1942, at the age of 26, Ed enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a Sergeant in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign and received five Overseas Services commendations. Following his discharge on November 28, 1944, he returned to the PRR until 1963. And then took a Welders position with the Wheelabrator Corp. Of Mishawaka until he retired in 1976. Ed and Uda A Atheide were married in Plymouth on October 12, 1946. Uda preceded him in death on October 12, 1991. His hobbies was spawned by a love of electronic which spanned 40 years of tinkering with and repairing radios, TVs and stereo components for family, friends and area residents. Technological advancements and electronics never hindered his ability to find a problem and fix it. He was busy up until his recent illness. Ed is survived by a son, Edward C. And Carolyn Gilbert of Wabash; a grandson and granddaughter, Scott and Michelle Gilbert also Wabash; two sisters, Lauretta and Clifford Berger Sr. of Plymouth, and Laurence Gunterman of Bremen; a brother, Donald E. Gilbert of Rossville. In addition to his wife Uda, Ed was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Robert Gilbert, and his sister, Helen Platz. Friends may call at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, Tuesday, from 2-4 p.m. And from 6- 8 p.m. Funeral services, also in the funeral home, will be on Wednesday, at 11 a.m.. Services will be conducted by Pastor Maurice Gindle of the Trinity United Methodist Church, of which Ed was a member, and will be followed by burial in the new Oakhill Cemetery with gravesite rites provided by the VFW Post 1162. Memorial contributions may be made to the Red Bird Mission, Inc. HC 69, Box 700, Beverly, KY., 40913.
