Vickie Lynn Hawkins, 57, passed away Friday, April 17, 2015 at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center.

Ms. Hawkins was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County. She was born on January 9, 1958 to the late Grace Virginia Ingle Hawkins and Houston A. Hawkins of Arden.

She was a member of Avery's Creek United Methodist Church and sincerely appreciated their prayers, concern, and support. She would also like to thank the Cancer Center of Western North Carolina for their compassion and care.

Vickie graduated with honors from T.C. Roberson High School and the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a B.A. in Psychology and Education. She obtained her Masters Degree from Western Carolina University. Vickie retired from Buncombe County Schools after 33 years of teaching. Her first year of teaching was at Weaverville Primary and the rest of her years were at Oakley Elementary. In her career she taught third, fourth, fifth grades and kindergarten. She loved teaching and the many children she taught. Oakley School was a special "home away from home" for her. She has many fond memories of the caring Oakley faculty and staff that deeply touched and made her life better.

In addition to her love of teaching, Vickie enjoyed reading, crafts, walking, and doing crossword puzzles. She especially loved animals and flowers. Her fondest memories were of spending time with family and friends. Vickie had a gift of finding humor in all situations.

She is survived by her sister, Cathy Hawkins of Arden; two aunts, Ila Parham of Leicester, and Christine King and her husband, Clyde of Leicester; cousins, Debbie Parham, Shirley Clark and her husband, Earl, Cecil Ingle and his wife, Carolyn, Sharon McDonald, Gary McDonald and his wife, Judy, Cheryl Jones and her husband, Michael, Andrew McDonald, Evetta Warren and her husband, Johnny, Darlene Burnette and her husband, Pat, Tim Hawkins, Ila McDonald, and Janet McDonald and her husband Bill Zink.

A funeral service is scheduled for 4:00 pm, Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Pastor Frank Ramos officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be private at Roberts Memorial Park.
