Charisse Liane Shipley, 63, died at 3:10 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2013, at Alaska Regional Hospital after a 16 year struggle with Breast Cancer.

Born August 28, 1950, in Long Beach, CA. Charisse was the daughter of Charles Hain and Betty (Atkinson) Hain. She graduated from Cal State University, Long Beach with a degree in Architectural Design and was a proud member of the Gamma Chi Chapter of Delta Gamma. She was involved in the remodel of many homes and businesses in Anchorage. After subsequent schooling in accounting, she became a CPA. Charisse married Gordon Brooks, her high school sweetheart, on June 30, 1978, was widowed within the year, and married Todd Shipley on July 13, 1996. She founded the Cancer Support Network in Anchorage after the death of her first husband and was past president of the Captain Cook Jaycees and an officer for the Alaska Jaycees. She was a member of the Allocations Panel for the United Way of Anchorage and chairperson of the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) organization for Alaska. Charisse was a competitive figure skater and she loved to dance, garden and quilt. She was a member of the Pointless Quilters and was awarded 1st place ribbons for 2 quilts submitted to the Alaska State Fair. A long-time member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Charisse was a skilled "6-in-hand" ringer in the St. Mark Bell Choir. A very loving person, she was known for her beautiful smile and loving and caring attitude.

Charisse is survived by husband, Todd; and his family Leon, Krissann and Dean; grandson James (Miriam) and great granddaughter Sofya; and four paternal cousins Jackie (John) Pierstorff, Jackie Gruchala, Raejean (Kirk) Brown, and Joanne Splivalo. Her Shipley in-laws: mother Lillian; brother Scott; his family Kerry, Nicholas, Harmony (Taylor) Goodson, and Myan; sister Pamela. She is also survived by her self-adopted family, Richard, Gordon's father; Gordon's brothers Robert (Mary); their family Katie (Peter) Zawistowski, Mark, and Bethany; and Gordon's brother Rick. A Celebration of Life was held with a reception following on Friday November 1, 2013, at St. Mark Lutheran Church. Following the reception, she was buried at Angeles Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Lutheran Social Services of Alaska, 1303 W 33rd Ave, Anchorage, AK. Arrangements are with Janssen Funeral Homes.
