After graduating from school, she became a telephone operator. She married John C. Gnass a recent German imigrant on June 26, 1917. They had six children (Ethel Moreen, Russell, John (Jack), Vernon, Marvel LaRene and Mervyn.) The death of her first born child, Ethel in 1936 was a severe loss to the entire family. She also was survived by her sister Ethel (Barnhart) Huger.
Frances was a member of the Pen Women of America and the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers. Several of her poems where published and she was also the lyrical composer of many musical songs.
When Frances discovered she was going to be a grandmother for the first time, she decided that with having her mother living in the home it was going to get very confusing being just 'Grandmother.' So she decided she wanted to be called 'Honey' by her grandchildren and her husband was to be called 'Pop.' And so, this is how they were affectionately called by their 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
