For the past six years, Wid (as she was known to friends and family) was a resident at Concordia Village in Springfield, IL, with her husband, Don, who now misses his life partner of 66 years.
Wid was born Oct. 24, 1928, in Pleasant Plains, IL, to Frieda and John Harms. She was the eighth of nine children. All her siblings preceded her in death, with the exception of a younger sister, Anna Geraldine (Robert) Gasaway, who survives her and lives in Springfield, IL. A sister-in-law, Norma Harms, also survives and lives in Springfield.
Wid grew up in Springfield, graduating from Trinity Lutheran Grade School, Springfield High School and Springfield Junior College.
She and Don were married on Aug. 28, 1948. They lived in Springfield for many years, raising their three daughters.
Next to her faith and trust in God, Wid's family was her life's calling. She completely devoted herself to her husband and daughters.
The one thing Wid enjoyed throughout her life was laying out in the sun, working on her tan. After the last frost each spring, she could be found in the back yard most days, sunning herself. During the summers, she and the kids spent almost every day at the Surf Club, soaking up the sun and socializing with friends.
Wid is survived by her husband, Don, and their three daughters, Also surviving are seven grandchildren. In addition, there are 15 great-grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate Wid's life will be held in the chapel at Concordia Village, 4101 W. Iles, Springfield, IL at 11 a.m. on April 18, 2015. The family will receive friends at the same location one hour prior to the memorial service. Interment will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
