When Richard Grant was born in 1786 in Greenville County, South Carolina, his father, Lieut. William M. Grant, was 25 and his mother, Mary Polly (Portman) Grant, was 21. He married Sarah "Sally" Wyatt about 1808. They had six children during their marriage

Richard and his family lived in St. Francis County, Arkansas from about 1930 to 1934 according to tax records.

In 1839, he purchased or received government land in Township 33, Range 24, in Polk County, Missouri. Taken from book, "History of Hickory, Polk, Cedar, Dade and Barton Counties, Missouri, 1889" - Published by Goodspeed, Early settlers of Polk County, Missouri, page 285.

In 1840 he listed on the United States Census in Polk County, Missouri.

He died in Polk County, Missouri, sometime around 1841. His son William filed to administer his estate in 1843.
