Newton Matthew Hollis was the son of Joseph Hollis born c. 1810 in Maury Co. TN and Isabella "Ibby" Wiley Hollis (1811-1881). Joseph was the youngest son of James and Sarah Choate Hollis. Isabella was the dau of William D. and Lydia Findley Wiley.

Newton served in the Civil War. On Apr 13, 1862 he was made 1st Lieutenant, 23rd Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers, Company B, under Captain William B.J. Moore.

Newton M. Hollis was a dry goods merchant in West Point, an active member of the West Point Methodist Church and one of its first trustees.
