Oakley Wayne Pyron passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015 in the Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham, Al.

Born April 23, 1923 in Guin, Al to Dalton Draper Pyron and Ethel Riley Pyron. A resident of Chelsea, Al, who formerly lived in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and St. Petersburg, Fl.

He attended Marion County High School where he played football and developed his love for the game and Alabama football. He joined the Navy in January, 1941 at the age of 17 as an Aviation Machinist's Mate Second Class . He was a gunner aboard the USS Curtiss when it came under attack by the Japanese and was part of the occupying fleet after the surrender of Japan. Serving until May 15, 1946, he won commendations from the commander Fleet Air Wing One, Victory Ribbons and Star for his service in the Asiatic-Pacific American Theatre. After returning home, he attended East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Mississippi. He was proud of his service as a policeman for the Birmingham Police Department and later moved to Florida where he devel-oped two retirement villages– Twin City and Storm Cove on Tampa Bay. He was a former mem-ber of Guin United Methodist and St. James United Methodist Church in St.Petersburg. After retirement he traveled extensively and enjoyed his love of yachting.

Mr. Pyron is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Buchanan Pyron; his brother, Robert Pyron (Gloria) of Guin; his brother-in-law Jerry Buchanan of Birmingham; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother father and his older brother Rex H. Pyron. Services held Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Guin City Cemetery. Pastor Brian Bagwell,Church of the Highlands, officiating.
