Pulitzer Prize Recipient, journalist, and author. In 1969, Fetterman received the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting for his story "Pfc. Gibson Comes Home," which dealt with the death of an American soldier whose body was returned from Vietnam and the impact on his family and community. On July 28, 1968, the article was published in the Louisville Times and Courier-Journal newspapers. Earlier, he had contributed to a Courier-Journal series on strip mining, which won a Pulitzer in 1967. Fetterman's freelance work had previously appeared in publications such as "The Saturday Evening Post," "National Geographic," "Time," and "Life." Additional writings on Appalachian related topics include "The People of Cumberland Gap" for "National Geographic" (1971) and his book, "Stinking Creek" (1967), which portrayed life in the Stinking Creek area of Knox County, Kentucky.
