Maude is the daughter of Morris & Abigail Snow Rosenbaum. (Her father was the second Jew to join the LDS Church.)

Granddaughter of LDS Church President Lorenzo Snow & fourth wife, Harriet Abigail Squires Snow.

Her baby sister thought Maude was the sun, moon and stars all rolled into one. Baby Armeda had been terribly ill and could not wait for her favorite person in the world to get home from school. As soon as her big sister walked in the door and scooped her up, Armeda's cries quieted and she nestled securely into Maude's comforting arms and died.

Maude worked hard and got good grades in school. She continued her studies and soon had earned her teacher's certificate. Upon this achievement, Maude was awarded the a new one-room schoolhouse, located in Harper, Utah. She was also the first female schoolteacher.

While attending a dance in downtown Brigham, Maude met a handsome young man named FREDERICK PETER SORENSON. He worked as a sheepherder and had emigrated as a youngster from Grena (Isle of Moen), Denmark. The two began courting, but had to be extra careful because in those days girls who married were forced to give up their posts to men, who might be supporting a family.

When they married on 19 JUNE 1899 in a double ceremony with his brother, the couple took up residence in Brigham City. Fred continued to build his sheepherding business and Maude worked to make a nice home. Together, they scrimped and saved, and soon were able to purchase their own home. They had their eyes set on one in particular until a Builder's custom-built home on Third East became available. Fred & Maude settled into their new home in the center of Third East.

On 28 MARCH 1901, their family grew, as they had a baby boy. He was named FREDERICK MORRIS "PAT" (He would marry MYRTLE LILLYWHITE and have a son, FREDERICK MORRIS; in later years after their divorce, he married EVELYN BARKER.)

Six years later on 7 JANUARY 1907, they added a second child, their daughter, JUANITA LaVON. (She would marry MELVIN COOK and, after his untimely death, give birth to their daughter, MELVA LaVON. She then married Mel's cousin, PALMER SIEGFRIED, with whom she had a son, PALMER "BUD", JR.)

Their third child and second son, FORD LUCIOUS "FERD" was born 23 MARCH 1913. (He would marry MARIE BOTT and have one son, "JUGE". Ferd and Marie divorced and he married again in California, but her name is not known to me, his niece.)

Fred & Maude's fourth and last child was born 25 AUGUST 1918. They named their daughter, MELBA DONNA. (She married CLIFF HEMMING HANSEN, SR. 23 MAY 1944 and together, they had three children: MARY CATHERINE (11 OCT 1944), CLIFF "ROC" HEMMING, JR. (6 APR 1947) and me, ELAINE HOLLY (28 DEC 1958).

Fred's parents did not have enough money to emigrate from Denmark to America with their entire family, so they scrimped and saved enough to send a few children at a time. When they sent Fred and a younger brother to live with a supposedly "good Mormon family" west of Brigham, the farmer turned out to be cruel and beat the boys for the slightest provocation. The farmer also forced them to sleep in the cold barn and work his fields as hired hands. Fred's brother died as a result of the farmer's cruelty and wanted nothing to do with the LDS Church. In fact, it took Grandmother 22 years to get Grandfather to become active again. My mother (MELBA) was three years old (1921) when she traveled with her parents and siblings to be sealed together as a family in the LDS Temple.

Grandpa (Fred) took ill one spring and stayed in bed a whole week. After the doctor left, Fred felt well enough to treat his bride to a show. Upon their return, the two were kidding each other good naturedly. Grandma made some comment about Grandpa not overdoing it and getting to bed and Grandpa laughingly made a lighthearted retort, leaned back on their bed and died. The date was 19 MARCH 1931.

Maude needed to support her growing family so she sold off her husband's herds of sheep, their horses and homestead in Monte Cristo to one of Grandpa's most trusted employees. She also took a job as a Social Worker and walked from one end of Box Elder to the other, assisting families who needed help. She also rented out the top two floors of their home and lived in its basement with her youngest (my mother, Melba), who was in her teens by this time.

She managed to send Melba to college at the "BYC" (Brigham Young College) one year, until mom realized how tight funds were and left to take a Civil Service job. When Grandma retired, she took up crocheting. She was amazingly talented; and her eyesight must've been terrific--because some of her pieces are incredibly minute and ever-so delicate.

In 1956, she had a heart attack and never really regained her health after that. She died 16 DECEMBER 1958 (just 12 days before my birth) and was laid to rest next to her sweetheart, Fred, in the family's plot just SE across the road from her maternal Grandparents', Lorenzo & Harriet Abigail Snow, in Brigham City Cemetery.

NOTE*** Just discovered someone has entered Alice Maude and Frederick P. Sorenson with their last name MISspelled as "SorensEn". This is WRONG. Grandpa, though Danish (which usually precludes an "En" spelling of surnames) chose to CHANGE the spelling to the Swedish version of "On" on his wedding day. Even the Richfield Reaper printed his surname with this WRONG spelling when they published his obit in 1931.
